Member of a Christian Protestant sect, the
Moravian Brethren. An episcopal church that
grew out of the earlier Bohemian Brethren, it
was established by the Lutheran Count
Zinzendorf in Saxony 1722. Persecution of the
Bohemian Brethren began 1620, and they were
held together mainly by the leadership of
their bishop, Comenius. Driven out of Bohemia
in 1722, they spread into Germany, England,
and North America. In 1732 missionary work
began. There are about 63,000 Moravians in
the USA, and small congregations in the UK
and the rest of Europe. It is an unworldly
practice, in doctrine close to Lutheranism,
with a simplified church hierarchy and
liturgy. There are about 63,000 Moravians in
the US.
